Outside the (Red Cable) Club Hatin’…

Removing the OnePlus Red Cable Club and other junk from my Android phone.

I do not exactly know which phone update brought the OnePlus Red Cable Club application onto my Android phone, but it got on my ever-loving nerves! The notifications could not be disabled through the normal way other applications/services can have their notifications disabled. I never used the application and I never intended to use it. I was outside the Red Cable Club hating and I wanted the club removed!

Why was I hating? Well:

  • This application was somehow installed without my full knowledge.
  • The application’s notifications could not be disabled through the normal route.
  • The application itself could not be deleted from the phone the way normal applications/services could.

Around the 8th of July, I took the the internet to search for a solution. Lucky for me, the OnePlus online community already had the solution in-hand. The solution requires the following for Linux PC host:

  • Android Debug Bridge (adb) command-line utility
  • Terminal
  • USB cable to connect host PC and the phone

I put the steps here in this post for my own archival purposes and in the case the OnePlus community page disappears. All credit goes to the posters in the linked solution. I also followed the subsequent steps to remove the OnePlus Cloud Services, Work-Life Balance, and Facebook stuff:

[1] Check for adb in the upstream repositories:

apt search adb

[2] Install adb:

sudo apt install adb

[3] Connect the Android phone to the host PC via the USB cable.

[4] Get an overview of the options for adb by typing the following:

adb --help

[5] Enter the following command and ensure adb and see the phone:

adb devices

[6] Enter the following command to remove the OnePlus Red Club:

adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.oneplus.membership

[7] Now, remove the other unwanted FILTH:

adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.heytap.cloud
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.oneplus.opwlb
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.facebook.appmanager
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.facebook.services
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.facebook.system
